Bessega and Borgo Molino make their mark at the Piva Junior Day. Zanei’s strike among the U16
Under a blazing sun, the Borgo Molino-Vigna Fiorita placed Andrea Bessega and Filippo Cettolin in the first two places, with a total of five riders in the top 10. Davide Zanei (Veloce Club Borgo) celebrated among the U16, beating Xavier Bordignon in the sprint (Postumia 73 D.L.).
The emerald green leaves of the sun-kissed vineyards coloured this 65th edition of the Piva Junior Day. The rays also warmed the atmosphere, making Col San Martino a seething furnace of sultriness and cheering. Many fans and onlookers arrived on the roads of the Piva Junior Day, a race dedicated to U16 and U18, as well as the antechamber of the famous Piva Trophy, an international classic on the Italian under-23 calendar. In the race dedicated to the junior category, the strongest was Davide Zanei (Veloce Club Borgo), who beat Xavier Bordignon (Postumia 73 D.L.) and Enrico Brombini (Ausonia Pescantina). The afternoon, however, was tinged with green and black, the colours of the Borgo Molino-Vigna Fiorita team, which conquered the finish line at Col San Martino with a triumphant parade. Andrea Bessega won, ahead of team-mate Filippo Cettolin, and behind them a void, with Luca Massolin (Ind.Forniture Moro) finishing 3rd, two minutes behind.
“This 65th edition of the Piva Junior Day took place in a beautiful public setting,’ explains AC Col San Martino President Mario De Rosso. ’There was no shortage of top athletes, in both categories, such as the Italian junior champion Brandon Fedrizzi. These are all details that show how our event is growing in importance and in means. As usual, I would like to thank all the volunteers, institutions and sponsors, without whom it would have been impossible to organise the competition. Now let’s recharge our batteries and start laying the foundations for next year, in which we want to keep the level of the race high.
U16 RACE – THE SUMMARY
The protagonist of the first part of the race was only one, the dorsal 203, Eric Zanolin. The rider of Zanolini-Q36.5 Sudtirol, the only representative of the team, remained alone in the lead for most of the 71.4 kilometres and was repeatedly first over the Guia GPM and the flying finish line at Col San Martino. Zanolin was thus rewarded with the respective trophies for these two classifications, demonstrating great tenacity. The finale of the race was ignited by the attack of a small group of four riders consisting of Davide Zanei (ASD Veloce Club Borgo), Xavier Bordignon (ASD Postumia 73 D.L. Ciclismo), Enrico Brombini (ASD U.S Ausonia Pescantina) and Pietro Ferronato (ASD Cycling Team Petrucci), who soon managed to take the lead. It was Bordignon himself who launched the long final sprint, but the ASD Postumia 73 D.L. Ciclismo athlete miscalculated the time, being skewered by Zanei. The 71.4 kilometres were covered at an average speed of 40.472 kilometres per hour.
“In the group in the early laps the heat was felt but it was bearable,’ explained the winner of the day, Zanei. ’The pace was high right from the start but that’s normal, we are in Veneto, here are all the strongest riders in Italy. I feel very good in my legs because in this period I managed to win a race the week before the Italian championship. Today the condition was the right one, I was a bit tired in the head but the pedals were turning well and it showed on the climbs. I managed to sprint well and I’m happy about that, as that has always been my weak point in recent years. Morale is high, this is my second win of the season and it came in a really important race with a very nice course.”.

JUNIOR RACE – THE SUMMARY
The afternoon appointment, set for 15:00 again in Via Treviset, saw 110 athletes in the junior category at the start. The heat was still dominant and scorched the asphalt of the Unesco Hills with temperatures reaching 32 degrees Celsius, although the perceived temperature was much higher. Of the eight laps envisaged, totalling 106.8 kilometres of racing, run at an average speed of 40.837 kilometres per hour, the first six, with the passage over the Guia GPM, did not make the difference, but served to skim the peloton. It was the last two passages, with the fearsome Combai climb (2.6 kilometres at 6.3%), that hurt the riders’ legs.
The boys of the Borgo Molino-Vigna Fiorita team, led by Cristian Pavanello, took the race into their own hands, bringing it inexorably to their side. The first to move was Filippo Cettolin, who before the last passage over Combai stretched and took a slight lead. He was then followed by team-mate Andrea Bessega, with whom he dug a huge furrow with his adversaries, who were left with no other choice but to play for the third step of the podium, won by Luca Massolin (Ind. Forniture Moro-C&G Capital), who did well to regulate a small group of four riders. The colours of Borgo Molino Vigna-Fiorita dominated the finishing order, placing five athletes in the top ten.
“It was a very hot race,’ said Andrea Bessega, ’perhaps the first of the season with such high temperatures. In the first six laps I saw that I responded well, so on the first passage on the Combai I attacked and skimmed the group. On the last lap we moved at different times and managed to find ourselves in the lead at the top. From there it was a full push to the finish. It is a great satisfaction, after two unlucky months between crashes and retirements, now I want to recover in view of a demanding end of season between world championships, Europeans and Giro della Lunigiana. In August we will be in training camp with the national team in Livigno to prepare for these races.”.
