Associazione Ciclistica Col San Martino
Associazione Ciclistica Col San Martino is the society made famous by the prestigious Trofeo Piva, an U23 international cycling race. The team is also active in organizing the cross country race called XC Tra Le Torri and the regional competitions for U17 and juniors called Piva Junior Day. The races take place in the territory of the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape. A.C. Col San Martino has always had as its goals the promotion of sports, its territory and the companies that support it in this mission.
For the period 2024- 2027, the association’s president is Mario De Rosso. With him there are: Francesco Merotto (vice president) and councilors Fabio Andreola, Giulia De Rosso, Alessio Grespan, Angelo Guizzo, Daniel Frezza (secretary), Pietro Merotto, Andreas Presti, Martino Puppetti (honorary president), Stefano Puppetti and Pietro Targa.
Associazione Ciclistica Col San Martino was founded on January 1962, thanks to Luigi Basso, Vincenzo Basso, Aldo Giotto, Romeo Mantese, Gino Spadetto, Rino Dorigo, Gino Lorenzoni and Gicondo Canel.
The first president was Dr Luigi Basso, a professor and unforgettable volunteer figure in the village, followed by Luigi De Biasi, pharmacist Renzo Zennaro, Martino Puppetti for 27 years, Angelo Guizzo and current number one Mario De Rosso
The ‘Ciclistica’, as it is called for simplicity’s sake, was thus born out of the passion and love of many sportsmen and women of Col San Martino, who had already been organising the famous Trofeo Piva since 1946, first thanks to the Virtus sports association and then to the Pro Loco.
History
The Debut
The debut took place on April 1, 1962 with the 14th edition of the Trofeo Piva, but even the following week AC Col San Martino was at work with the Regional Cycling Championship. In 1964, since fellow countryman Guido de Rosso was competing among the professionals, they wanted to set up a “Circuit of the Aces” that lasted until 1984: among the winners, besides De Rosso, the names of Van Looy, Merckx, Knudsen, Dancelli, Gimondi, Motta, Basso, Moser and Battaglin stand out.
Since 1966, the Trofeo Piva, main event of “Ciclistica”, has become a race International, later becoming in later years first pre-World Cup and pre-Olympic test and in the 1990s also a UCI World Cup test. In the years from the 1970s to the 1990s, AC Col San Martino organized about ten races a year of different categories.
Awarded by CONI with stars of merit, she was invited by the F.C.I. to set up competitions for the new categories that have followed since 2000. Prominent among the races organized by AC Col San Martino is the organization of three editions of the Giro del Veneto (in 1992 with winner Ghirotto, in 1993 Sciandri and in 1994 Bortolami), of the Italian U23 championship won by Danilo Di Luca in 1998 and the Italian women’s championship won by Rosalisa Lapomarda in 2002 and a few stage finishes from the U23 Giro d’Italia
In the spirit of the founding members and the first editions of the Trofeo Piva, there is also collaboration in recreational and cultural activities taking place in the municipality of Farra di Soligo and, more generally, in the Province of Treviso.
